Embracing Fall at PDX Forest Preschool: Welcoming the Rain and Dressing for Success

As the long, sun-soaked days of summer begin to wane and we welcome the cool crispness of fall, the changing seasons bring new opportunities for exploration and discovery in the forest. At PDX Forest Preschool, the transition from summer to fall marks a time of excitement as we embrace the rain, celebrate the shifting landscape, and prepare for a fresh rhythm in our outdoor adventures.

The arrival of autumn is a magical time for our young explorers. Leaves begin to paint the forest floor in vibrant reds and golds, the air turns crisp with the promise of rain, and we start to experience cooler mornings that give way to warm afternoons. For children, the sensory experiences of these seasonal shifts are profound—catching the first raindrops on their faces, stomping in puddles, and feeling the changing textures of the earth beneath their boots. As the rain returns, so does the joy of discovery, and with it comes the need to be prepared for our full days outdoors, no matter the weather.

Dressing for Success: How to Prepare Your Child for Fall Adventures

One of the best ways to ensure your child thrives during fall at Forest Preschool is by dressing them for the unique weather patterns that autumn brings. Cool and damp mornings quickly shift into warmer, sunny afternoons, so layering is the key to keeping your little one comfortable and ready to explore.

Here’s a guide to dressing your child for success during our fall sessions:

1. Base Layers: Starting with Warmth

Mornings in the forest can be chilly and damp, so it’s important to start with a warm, moisture-wicking base layer. Choose merino wool or synthetic fabrics that keep the body warm while wicking sweat away from the skin. Avoid cotton, as it tends to trap moisture and can make children cold if they get wet.

2. Mid Layers: Building Comfort

On top of the base layer, add a cozy fleece or wool sweater for insulation. This layer can be easily removed as the day warms up but will provide essential warmth during the cooler parts of the day. Think of this layer as a buffer that helps regulate body temperature while still allowing for movement and play.

3. Outer Layers: Embracing the Rain

Fall is often the beginning of our rainy season in Portland, and embracing the rain is all part of the fun! A good waterproof jacket and pants are essential to keep your child dry and comfortable during our explorations. Look for breathable, durable rain gear that can withstand mud, puddles, and the occasional roll on the forest floor. Rain boots are a must, but make sure they fit well with warm socks underneath.

4. Accessories: Staying Cozy

In the cooler mornings, consider adding a hat and lightweight gloves. These can be stashed away later in the day when the sun comes out. Don’t forget wool socks to keep little feet warm, dry, and comfortable inside their boots!

5. Pack Extra Layers

As the weather can change throughout the day, it's always a good idea to pack extra layers in your child’s backpack. An additional sweater or long-sleeve shirt can be useful if the temperature dips, and packing extra socks is always a good idea in case of wet feet.

6. Hydration and Sunscreen

Even in the cooler weather, it’s important to keep your child hydrated and protect their skin from the sun. Pack a water bottle and consider applying sunscreen in the morning, as the sun can still be strong during afternoon play.

Fostering Resilience Through Outdoor Learning

At PDX Forest Preschool, we embrace the changing seasons as part of our learning journey. Rainy days offer new ways to explore and connect with the environment. The rhythm of the rain, the scent of damp earth, and the joy of splashing through puddles all contribute to a deep sense of wonder and connection to nature.

By dressing appropriately for the weather, your child will not only be comfortable but also empowered to fully engage in the magic of the forest, no matter what the day brings. As we transition from summer’s warmth to fall’s refreshing coolness, we invite you to join us in celebrating this seasonal shift and all the new adventures that come with it.

Let’s welcome the rain, explore the beauty of autumn, and continue to nurture a love of the outdoors that will last a lifetime.

Happy fall, and we’ll see you in the forest!
